Enhance Your Home’s Curb Appeal
They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. This is important for homes as well and their curb appeal.
Can you remember the last time you really looked at the outside of your house? Does it look neat, clean, and well taken care of? If someone was driving by would they think “that’s a lovely home” or “that house needs some work”? The exterior aesthetics of your home all come together to determine your curb appeal — the first impression your home makes to those looking at it.
Your curb appeal can be the difference between quickly selling your home and having it stuck on the market for months. If your home is slacking in the curb appeal department, a great way to turn your unattractive home into an attractive home is to upgrade or refinish the garage door. Your home’s garage and door are typically a very large portion of your home’s looks. Depending on your budget, you can choose one of two excellent ways to transform the look: repaint or get a new door.
Garage Door Repainting
Garage door repainting, whether retouching the current color or choosing a new one, can make a huge difference for your home! It’s a simple process that not only makes your home look great, but extends the life of the garage door, too!
Before starting your painting process, check the weather. Exterior painting should not be done in extreme temperatures, hot or cold, or if rain is in the forecast.
- Clean the door. This can be done with a sponge and some soapy water. Sand off any paint that peeling or chipping.
- Tape and/or cover areas that do not need paint. A drop cloth below the door prevents any drips, and tape will prevent any area from being painted that shouldn’t be!
- Prime, if necessary. If you’re changing colors, priming the door helps the new color look bold, rather than the old color showing through. This is especially important if you’re going from a darker color to a lighter color. If you’re putting a new coat of the same color, priming is not necessary. Keep in mind, many paints today can be purchased with primer already in them, which will save you a step.
- Paint the door. A roller will get the job done quickly, but depending on the door a brush may be needed for areas with added details. Try to finish each coat within a single day, which shouldn’t be an issue.
- Assess the color. If you’re happy with the color, call it done. If you want it darker, add another coat. When you like the color, remove tape & cloths when door is completely dry.
