Don’t be Tricked by Fraudulent Garage Door Company

A recent article from the Dallas Morning News reported on a scam that has been going on for years. The article shines light on the fact that companies – or one company – uses fake, reputable garage door company names to gain business. The practices mentioned in the article are tricky.

Overhead Door has been identified as a reputable company being mimicked by the company being called out in this article. In a set of Valpak coupons in Dallas, Texas they have used a similar name to confuse customers.

When customers are looking for the long-established Overhead Door Company of Dallas, they might see the other companies’ ad and think it is the real Overhead Door. That’s what they are hoping at least.

According to the article, once the garage door company comes to the customer’s home they use similar unethical tactics to drastically overcharge for their services. “GDS techs cut wires when a homeowner isn’t looking to give themselves more repairs. Their markup on parts is astronomical.”1

Please do your research before you hire a garage door repair company, even if they come up at the top of your Google search.

Here are some things to look out for from the company mentioned in the article:

  1. Look at the lower left portion of the Value Pack coupons for the small print to see what city the company is based out of.
  1. When you call the number listed on the ad, do they answer with a generic name or with the name you expected when you called?
  1. Do a Google search. Check out their website and ask these questions. What is their name? What is their street address? Is it an industrial building or a UPS store dropbox that the GDS uses?
  1. Look at the vehicle that comes to your home to do repairs. Is there a logo or something that indicates that they are, in fact, the company you expected?
