The era of mass manufacturing garage doors began in 1921. In 1931, Ford introduced the Model T, thus giving us a reason for a garage space in the first place, according to an article written by Tom Wadsworth called “The first comprehensive history of the American door industry.”

Wooden garage doors were prominent in the 1900s and it was not until after the 1950s for other materials to become popular.  The earliest prominent brands were: Barcol Overdoor, Rowe, and McKee Door.

“Aluminum and glass doors began exploding as service stations sprang up throughout the country. Steel doors made their appearance, usually in commercial settings. In 1959, fiberglass garage door production began as a lightweight door requiring minimal maintenance.”¹

In 1974, about half the homes included a two car garage, making the car garage business boom, yet again. In 1980, steel garage doors became increasingly popular and would be used throughout the residential market.
