Noisy, Loud Garage Door Fix
If your garage door can be heard from blocks away when it opens and closes, your family and neighbors may not be very happy with you!
A noisy, loud garage door can be caused by the garage door itself or the garage door opener. If it’s the garage door opener, here are a few ideas on how to fix it. They can be time-consuming, but they’re worth it. If it’s looking like the garage door itself is the issue, you’re in luck. A noisy garage door can be a huge headache, but fixing it, luckily, is not.
Below are four ways to get rid of a noisy garage door.
- To begin, tighten the door and track hardware. Use a deep socket and ratchet on all the nuts to snug them up. Be careful not to over tighten, that can pull the carriage bolt heads through the door skin or strip the lag screw holes.
- Check for worn rollers and hinges. Replace if necessary. If you’re not sure how to do this, check out our DIY guide to replacing garage door rollers! Worn rollers and hinges make a lot of noise and can be quickly replaced.
- Next, look at the garage door opener chain. If the chain is loose, chances are you’re hearing a loud slapping sound and seeing jerky door movements. If this is happening, tighten the chain per your instruction manual. If you have a track drive opener, lubricate the track with grease. If you have a screw drive opener, grease the threads.
- Once everything is tightened, spray all moving parts with garage door lubricant: hinges, roller bearings, springs, torsion bar bearings, and any other pivotal point that can cause vibrations. Be liberal, but if there are any large drips, wipe those away. Spray the top of the springs using enough lubricant for it to flow down to the base of the springs. Spray inside each track and around the metal rollers. Spray the hinges between the panels. Repeat the lubrication process every six months to reduce wear and tear and to keep the door quiet.
One of a few or these tips should take care of your noisy garage door in no time!
