Double vs. Single doors — Which Do You Prefer?

Choosing between single garage doors or one double door does not have to be a difficult task. Take all things into consideration and weigh the pros and cons. Thankfully, they offer two very different looks. Read below and decide which option is right for you.

The difference between double vs. single garage doors:

It can be a style preference. A double garage door takes up a lot of space. It is very noticeable and has a big impact on the look of your home. Two single doors will offer a completely different look and feel. If you are unsure about what you like, take a look around the neighborhood that you live in or at homes similar to the one you are about to purchase. You will soon discover what you like based on looks alone.

Both doors probably will not go out at the same time. With two single doors, if one garage door goes out you will always have at least one other escape route. If you have one large door and something goes wrong with it, both of your cars could get trapped inside. But that is not really a big deal because you can call us at Overhead Door and we will quickly come to the rescue.

Consider the space. If you live in the Midwest like we do, when you open and close a large garage door you let in a lot of hot or cold air. Having a smaller opening might actually make a difference. A large garage door allows more air to exit and enter the space. This one might not be a deal breaker for you, but it is something to consider.

Money could be a factor. Mechanically operating two single doors could take more electricity than one big door. Replacing springs or other parts in two doors could also become more costly if they fail. Think of the difference being similar to maintaining two small cars versus one truck. Talk to a garage door expert about the costs associated with two doors versus one big door. It is always smart to think about short and long term numbers.

You do not have to show everything off. With two single doors, you do not have to expose all the contents of your garage to passersby every time you enter or leave the garage. One side of the garage can be used for whatever you want.

A double door might be more difficult to open. One big door could put greater strain on the opening mechanism. It can also make it harder to open manually. Some doors are heavy and hard to open with your bare hands. It is difficult for some people and might require more than one person to operate.

Less margin for error. With two single doors and a divider in between there might be less space to back out or into than with one big door. This could mean less usable space when wanting to open the door to work on your car or hang out in the garage.
